GKR KARATE

DEFEND YOURSELF

self defence is not just a set of techniques; it’s a state of mind that begins with the belief that you are worth defending.

GKR Karate Region 29 Gary Luxton

Your workshop

Meet Sensei Gary Luxton, 4th dan black belt and senior instructor for GKR Karate in the south Brisbane region.

Gary was the victim of an attack at the age of 17, feeling helpless as three boys mugged him for the grand total of $5.

From that day Gary decided he would learn to protect himself, both mentally and physically, from bullies.

Although we can’t pass on the knowledge of 20 years training in one hour, Gary has developed a workshop with 5 ‘common’ self defence and extraction moves that will benefit both adults and children. It is important to remember these are not appropriate for a school environment.

The self defence class will run for approximately one hour in the school hall, alongside the regular karate class. It will be taught by several of our senior 2nd and 3rd dan instructors. Please wear comfortable clothes and bring water.

what you will

learn

the law

This is a critical part many self defence course miss. What level of force can you exert to defend yourself or your family?

The answers might surprise you!

Read our blog ‘Self Defence Within the Law’.

appropriatness

What is appropriate to defend yourself in a personal safety situation, will not be appropriate at school.

Learn techniques to suit each circumstance.

defence

Although we can’t provide a solution for all situations, the class will cover some of the more common attacks occuring on the street and in the school yard.

Remember, what you will learn is only appropriate when your personal safety is at stake. Even a trained martial artist would hand over their wallet or keys given the choice. Nothing is worth your life.

your voice

While it might seem obvious, remember that your voice is always the first point of defence.

Learn when and what to shout.

defence moves

The class covers five common attack and defence situations using very basic extraction and deflection methods. You don’t need to be young, physically fit or a trained martial artist to feel confident in any of these techniques.
